Jack Farley

In 2023 I began working with Dr. Irwin from the UBC Zoology Department on a computer model of secondary contact between two populations with incomplete reproductive isolation. Our research focuses on the role of mate search costs and pleiotropy in preserving distinct mating types.

In November 2021 I spent two weeks volunteering for the Jocotoco Foundation at Reserva Tesoro Escondido leading bird inventory efforts. During that time I recorded 228 species of birds including endangered species such as Great Green Macaw, Purple Quail-Dove, and Baudo Guan.

I spent January to May or 2022 as an intern at the Sustainable Roots Foundation in Cosanga, Ecuador. During that time I conducted regular dragonfly surveys of the Sustainable Roots Reserve. I observed 10 different species at the reserve, several of which are endemic to the region.

In my first year at UBC I was assigned a research project. My collaborator Ally Howard and I chose to do ours comparing the epiphytic community compositions of native and nonnative hardwood species on the UBC Vancouver Campus. Our paper was selected for publication in UBC’s online repository cIRcle.

My first web development project was creating a website for Nachiket Children’s Libraries, a nonprofit founded by my grandmother Asha Pawagi dedicated to promoting literacy in rural India.
